Imran Khan's Vision: Shaukat Khanum Hospital is born
Introduction
During the early 1990s, there were
numerous problems that inundated the healthcare system in Pakistan and this was
chiefly true when it came to cancer. The problem was there were not sufficient
particular hospitals, and the price of action was beyond most families’ means.
Amidst this impending challenge, there was a man with a master plan to
revolutionaries the healthcare system and bring miracles to thousands of cancer
patients. That person was Imran Khan, a famous cricket player who became
immensely popular and had enough money to build something really important –
the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre
(SKMCH&RC).
Genesis of a Vision
In 1991, Imran khan started a task
of construction a cancer hospital now known as Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer
Hospital and Research Centre afterward trailing his mother to the illness. In
1985, his mother, Shaukat Khanum, was acknowledged with cancer. This is
because, Pakistan did not have enough good treatment facilities and hence, she
had to seek treatment outside this country. Sadly, with all the doctors’
intervention, she could not pull through. Imran Khan was also saddened by this
type of situation, and he later constructed a new cancer treatment hospital in
Pakistan to avoid the same challenges.
The Dream Takes Shape
Imran Khan’s aim was not solely to
construct a hospital. It was his vision to have a holistic organization that
would offer quality health care services to all individuals including the
needy. He wanted to create a comprehensive system that encompassed not only
treatment but also research and teaching to enhance the quality of healthcare
in Pakistan.
Building the Foundation
The basis pebble for the Shaukat Khanum
Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre was rested down on 29th
December, 1994 in Lahore. This construction was one of the largest milestones
in the progress of healthcare in Pakistan as a source of hope and power. The
design of the and the medical facilities were coordinated prior to arriving in
order to meet the international norms. The project attracted professionals who
used their knowledge and expertise in arriving at the structure of the proposed
health facility; a hospital.
Overcoming Challenges
The building of Shaukat Khanum Memorial
Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) was not so informal the
creator has met many trials. The problem with fundraising persisted throughout
the efforts that were coupled with first uncertainties that tested Imran Khan.
Some critics for such a massive experiment, arguing that the idea is idealistic
given the resource-poor and administratively challenging country. But as for
the vision of Imran Khan and hundreds of thousands of such Pakistanis who wanted
to bring change for real, the dream did not die.
The Inauguration
Creased for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial
Cancer Hospital & Research Centre was bushed in October 1994 and the
infirmary started confessing patients on December 29, 1994. It therefore was a
time of pride and pleasure having happened after some years of hard work,
willpower and persistence. This was not only a victory of Imran Khan but
thousands of cancer patients and their families got a harbor.
